Australia Remembers 79th Commemorative Service

Ms FELICITY WILSON (North Shore)

—Earlier this year, I attended the seventy-ninth anniversary of the Battle of Sydney with the Member for Manly, James Griffin. It was a morning to reflect on the historical moment when Japanese submarines entered Sydney Harbour and unleashed a series of attacks on our city. More importantly, it was a time to remember the many lives lost during these attacks, including the 21 individuals on- board HMAS Kuttabul. War had made its way to our shores and became heavily imprinted in the memories of those who live to tell their stories today. I was honoured to join James Griffin MP with members of the North Shore and Northern Beaches communities to commemorate this significant event. We are solemnly reminded of the cost of our freedoms. Thank you to all those who contributed to the service, including speakers Luke McNamara from St Aloysius College and Chaplain Catherin Wynn-Jones from HMAS Penguin. I also want to thank students from St Aloysius College, Middle Harbour Public School and Mosman High School for participating in the day.
