HMAS Sydney (II) 83rd Anniversary

Ms FELICITY WILSON (North Shore)

—Speaker I recognise the 83rd Anniversary of the tragic sinking of the HMAS Sydney (II). On 19 November 1941, the HMAS Sydney II met her end when she encountered the German raider, KORMORAN, off Australia's west coast. Both ships were lost, and tragically, 645 officers and crew aboard the Sydney perished. During World War II, HMAS Sydney (II) served with great distinction in the Mediterranean and participated in the first bombardment of Bardia. She was integral to the sinking of the Italian destroyer ESPERO and the Italian cruiser BARTOLOMEO COLLEONI. I want to acknowledge the tireless dedication of Mr Brian Yeo, HMAS SYDNEY Association Master of Ceremonies, whose dedication helped ensure the commemoration's success. I also recognise the service of Lieutenant Commander James Stahlhut RAN, Captain Cameron Steil CSC RAN and Chaplain Ryan Austin-Eames RAN. I extend my thanks to the hardworking team behind the event and recognise the members of the Royal Australian Navy and those who serve on the current HMAS Sydney (V). A special thanks to the family members of HMAS Sydney (II) and those who continue to serve in the Royal Australian Navy today. Lest we forget.
