Celebrating 100 Years of Nutcote

Ms FELICITY WILSON (North Shore)

—I am delighted to commemorate the centenary of Nutcote, the cherished home of Australian author and illustrator May Gibbs, located in Kurraba Point. This milestone was celebrated with a special exhibition at Nutcote, highlighting the enduring legacy of May Gibbs and her beloved characters. Nutcote, designed by architect B.J. Waterhouse and built between 1924 and 1925, served as May Gibbs' residence and studio for 44 years. It was here that she created the iconic Bib and Bub comic strip and drew inspiration from her garden and the surrounding bushland. Following her passing in 1969, Nutcote faced the threat of demolition. However, through the dedicated efforts of the May Gibbs Foundation and the community, the house was preserved and is now a heritage-listed site open to the public. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all those involved in preserving Nutcote and bringing May Gibbs' legacy to life for future generations. This centenary celebration serves as a testament to the enduring impact of May Gibbs' work and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage.
