Marking Merchant Navy Day 2025
Ms FELICITY WILSON (North Shore)
—Merchant Navy Day on 3 September each year gives us the opportunity to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of Australian merchant seaman who served in times of war since World War One. It is a time for deep reflection as we think solemnly about the seafarers in both conflicts who risked everything to secure the freedom we enjoy today. Every year a service is held to mark Merchant Navy Day at the Mosman Merchant Navy Memorial. This year's memorial was impeccably organised by Mr Merrill Barker, Coordinator of the Merchant Navy Chapter at Forestville RSL sub-branch. I would like to congratulate Merrill and the sub-branch for their work. The service for 2025 featured a number of beautiful tributes, including from our active naval servicemen and local schoolchildren. Tributes were also paid to several branch members who had sadly passed away since last year's Merchant Navy Day. After the service, attendees joined together to lay wreaths at the foot of the Mosman War Memorial. Lest we forget.
