After 30 remarkable years, the closure of Blues Point Bookshop marks the end of an era for our community. Since opening its doors in 1996, the bookshop has been far more than a place to buy books; it has been a cultural cornerstone and a gathering place for readers, writers and neighbours alike. At the heart of this institution is its founder, Helen Baxter, whose vision was shaped by the great bookstores she encountered while travelling through Paris, London and across Europe during her time working with Qantas. Inspired by those experiences, she created something truly special at Blues Point. Over its time, the bookshop hosted more than 600 author events, enriching our literary life and connecting countless people through a shared love of storytelling. Many will remember the extraordinary moment when, after being forced to relocate, hundreds of community members turned out to help carry books to the new store across the street—a testament to the deep affection and respect that Helen inspired. Helen's departure from the Sydney bookstore scene will leave a void in our cultural life. It will not be the same. I thank Helen and her Blues Point Bookshop for this contribution.
