Living Seawalls Boulders Project

Next week, marine scientists from the Sydney Institute of Marine Science will return to Lavender Bay to complete their three-year biodiversity survey of the Living Seawall Boulders project. What began as an ambitious environmental initiative has become a powerful example of community-led conservation in Sydney Harbour, steered by the passion of Laura and Ben from Sydney by Kayak. Sydney by Kayak committed more than $30,000 towards the design, manufacture, transport and installation of the Living Seawall Boulders. The work, undertaken by the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, has helped to deepen our understanding of marine ecosystems and demonstrated the positive impact that innovative habitat restoration projects can have on local biodiversity. These living boulders are quite remarkable. They are designed to ecologically enhance the artificial shoreline that has been built along much of Sydney Harbour since colonisation. These habitat boulders incorporate rock pools that provide refuge from desiccation and predators for marine organisms. I thank Laura and Ben at Sydney by Kayak and the incredible team at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science for three years of enhancing our local marine environment in Sydney Harbour.
