Twenty-five years ago, 250,000 people walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge for the People’s Walk for Reconciliation, the highlight of Corroboree 2000 in one of the most powerful acts of unity in our nation’s history. It sent a clear message—Australians wanted a better, fairer future, grounded in respect and recognition.
During this year’s National Reconciliation Week, we’re reminded that the spirit of that walk still matters. The theme ‘Bridging Now to Next’ invites every one of us to think about what comes next—and how we each play a part in shaping it.
Reconciliation is not about politics. It’s about people. It’s about truth-telling, mutual respect, and acknowledging the full story of our country—including the parts that are hard to hear.
Young Australians in particular are showing what it means to step up—to listen, to learn, and to stand with integrity. That gives us hope.
This week, take a moment to understand the history of the place you live. Talk to your community. Listen deeply. Share stories. Because reconciliation isn’t a week—it’s a commitment that lives in what we say and do every day.
We all have a role to play. And 25 years on, the message is the same: we’re stronger when we face the future together.
