Community Support for Accelerated Berrys Bay Transformation

Published on 16 December 2022

The community is backing the transformation of Berrys Bay into a stunning foreshore park and public space, as shown through feedback provided on the draft master plan consultation.

The community had spoken loud and clear in the consultation, welcoming plans for the new 1.9-hectare precinct, which would also be handed back to the public years earlier than previously anticipated.

“As part of my promise to reinvigorate Berrys Bay for our local community, I instigated extensive community engagement to facilitate local interests and expertise in shaping the vision for this historic harbourside location."

“I’d like to thank the community, including the working group members, for playing an active role in shaping the exciting future plans for Berrys Bay, which will see this physically stunning and historically important part of Sydney Harbour transformed for all to enjoy."

“Our accelerated plans will see Berrys Bay handed back to the community from late 2024, with work to progress even sooner now that the area is no longer required as a construction site for the Western Harbour Tunnel.”

Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward said community consultation had revealed strong support for the draft master plan for the Waverton precinct.

“Feedback demonstrates the community is in favour of the NSW Government vision, particularly regarding picnic areas with seating, connections to the water and a continuous accessible foreshore path,” Mrs Ward said.

“It’s because of the NSW Government’s $112.7 billion infrastructure pipeline that we can transform this rundown and unused space into a destination for locals and visitors.”

Since early 2021, I and the NSW Government have worked closely with North Sydney Council and the Berrys Bay Community Stakeholder Working Group in developing the draft master plan.

After extensive consultation, Transport for NSW is now working to finalise the master plan, incorporating feedback received from the community and other key stakeholders.

The final Berrys Bay master plan will be released to the public in early 2023. Further consultation on concept designs for precincts one and two of Berrys Bay master plan is expected to occur in mid-2023.
