Expanded Harbour Foreshore at Blues Point a step closer

Published on 22 December 2022

One of the most picturesque parks on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour is back in local community ownership, now that official paperwork has now been signed to return compulsorily acquired land to the community and create an uninterrupted harbourside park along Blues Point.

This major step delivered on my commitment to work alongside the community to acquire 1 Henry Lawson Ave from private ownership as an investment in increasing local parklands.

“Up until now, Blues Point has been split in two by private land, so securing this acquisition and finalising this land transfer is a big win for the local community and visitors to the area.”

“I have worked side-by-side with our community and advocated within Government to achieve this outcome. I made the promise before the last election that I would see it through – and I have."

“Wherever possible, I have worked to expand our public lands and increase our parks to ensure that our local community has much-needed open space and amenity."

“Today’s land transfer increases local community land ownership by 9.24 hectares.”

The land at 1 Henry Lawson Avenue is currently home to a dilapidated building which will be demolished to make way for continuous public access along the foreshore while respecting and restoring the heritage of the early 20th-century slipway.

Minister for Planning and Minister for Homes Anthony Roberts said the transfer, which has been almost 40 years in the making, is a great step forward for the community.

“This has been a long and involved process to achieve this great result, and I thank the community, council and previous landholder for their cooperation,” Mr Roberts said.

“This spot has one of the best views of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the city, so opening it up to all benefits locals and visitors from across the globe.

“This is another successful step towards achieving the Premier’s Priorities to invest in more green spaces across NSW, which are vital to both the physical and mental health of our communities.”

This piece of land, along with 34 other parcels of land, will now be transferred into council ownership.
