Victory in Europe Day

Published on 08 May 2020

V is for Victory!

Today marks the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe, VE Day. VE Day marks the day of Germany’s surrender, bringing to and end the Second World War in Europe, and marking the Allies defeat of Nazism and fascism.

Over 9,500 Australians were killed in the war against Germany, including more than 5,000 members of the Royal Australian Air Force. Over 8,000 Australians became Prisoners of War to Germany in the Second World War.

And although the news of Nazi Germany’s defeat was met with much rejoice in Australia, the war against Japan was still being fought close to home in Asia and the Pacific. It would not be until 15 August that the Second World War would finally come to a close.
