Merchant Navy Day

Ms FELICITY WILSON (North Shore)

—Speaker, I recently joined with Merchant Navy veterans and members of my local community to commemorate Merchant Navy Day, which is held on the third of September each year. We join together to remember those who of the Australian Merchant navy who gave their lives for their country and have no know grave but the sea. The third of September is also the anniversary of the first attack on an Allied merchant ship in the Second World War, only hours after Britain declared war on Germany in 1939. Without warning, the German submarine U-30 torpedoed British liner SS Athenia, killing over one hundred and ten crew and passengers. I would like to thank all those who participated on the day Merchant Navy RSL sub‑Branch President Don Kennedy OAM and Secretary Merrill Barker, Sr Mary Leahy OAM, Chief Warrant Officer Andrew Perry HMAS Penguin, Captain George Campbell, Steve Vella, David Field, Mayor Cr Corrigan, and the School Captains of Mosman High School. They will be remembered for ever more. Lest we forget.
