Living Seawalls Boulders in Lavender Bay

Ms FELICITY WILSON (North Shore)

—Last week I had the pleasure of officially opening the new Living Seawalls Boulders installation in Lavender Bay. This project was the brainchild of the terrific Sydney Institute of Marine Science and local business Sydney By Kayak. Living Seawalls mimic natural habitats like rockpools and the root structure of mangroves, converting the flat surface of manmade seawalls into habitats for marine life. Sydney By Kayak's co-founder Laura Stone in partnership with the Sydney Institute of Marine and North Sydney Council came together to fund a new project of Living Seawall Boulders. These Living Seawall Boulders will increase the Sydney Harbour's biodiversity while filtering harmful pollutants. I enjoyed the opportunity to test my kayaking skills and joined Laura and the team from the Sydney Institute of Marine Science inspecting the progress of these boulders that have been installed. I acknowledge the terrific work that Laura is undertaking in our local community to protect and preserve marine conservation, and the incredible ongoing work that the Sydney Institute of Marine Science do in marine research and collaboration.
